The VERY tidy greenhouse!
May08026.jpg

As most things in this garden revolve around this greenhouse it gets a thorough cleaning each Spring and Autumn. It takes most of the day but the effect is well worth it it is also a time to tidy the "holding pens" at the side of the greenhouse where additional plants that have been propagated for sale or use in the garden can be kept.

The Woodland Walk - In Spring

The path into the wood has just been covered with fresh chippings again this year.  The area to the right of the path is to be cleared and treated for the ground elder.  I want to add a tree fern here and a mini stumpery al la Highgrove complete with hostas and a selection of evergreen ferns.  The daffs will be lifted as soon as they have flowered and then the ground here which is very heavy will have grit and compost dug in before we plant up.  Question now is where do I get the stumps from?

A selection of helebores in the woodland garden, spring 2007

This planting was placed here as the head of the Christmas rose is better viewed from below and this woodland garden is at shoulder height as you enter the driveway.  They make a very lovely sight on a spring day.  I have extended this planting and look forward (as every gardener does) to seeing the results in Spring 09!

One of the  things I immediately spotted as we came up the drive of the cottage on our first visit was the greenhouse.  "Look, a greenhouse, we've got to buy it!"  The under gardener thought I was joking.  You cannot buy a property just because it has a greenhouse, but then he did not understand that this would be the powerhouse of the whole garden.  It was in very poor condition and one of the first things he did was to renovate the inside with a new floor and new staging.  I would have loved one of thoes Victorian styled jobs with the cold frames.  When the undergardener found they were about £10k he went about the renovations with renewed vigour!

The woodland garden continues to evolve, March 2007

We spent a good deal of January 07 & 08 stripping the over grown bank at the front of the cottage and I, with the help of the shredder, turned it into the bark you now see on the steps.  It looks a good deal better once it has been "walked in".  This job is done by the Doberman on her many partols around her garden.  The steps were built by the under gardener about a year after we moved in and they have been a great success.  You will see them later on with the hand rail added.  Winter 07/8 will be the time we shall construct an archway at the top of these steps for you to pass through as you exit the woodland and enter the orchard.  We intend to make this arch way in the same style as the handrail.
