This is a new section of our garden though it has been developing slowly, very slowly over the last three years.  This whole section of our website is new and not fully developed so please keep watching for developments.

The bank before work started

The steep angle here is the main problem

January 2007 and we started the huge task of clearing the bank at the front of the cottage.  This picture gives you an idea of just what a tangled mess there was to clear. The huge amount of processing of what was taken off the bank took far longer to clear than the "chopping back" did.

This picture is taken from the sunken garden.

Just getting into this part of the garden is a challenge.  We have put a gate from the main drive into what I now think of as the bank garden.  Garden, well that is a bit of an exaggeration, but it will be!!

Work continues on clearing this bank.

The little trees start to grow!

Not the best picture but you get the idea.  The Leylandii have been planted and the red canes you can just see are to stop contractors who "tidy" the lane from cutting them down.  This has already happened once!  We have also had a tractor mount the curb and drive over the plants and several had to be replanted or replaced.  Luckily I did over order and have "grown on" extra plants just for this purpose.  They are now getting well established but will not be allowed to grown more than three feet high. We hope that they will make an impact by the time we open the garden again in 2010.

The Bank January 2008

And now the clearing is finished and we can start to plan the re-planting of this whole area.  The under gardener noted that this is bigger than our last garden in its entirety!  There are snowdrops here and when the ivy was cleared away I found more, and now we can start to lift and divide the clumps and spread the snowdrops the full length of the bank.  There are also signs of a good number of ferns, some have been left and some moved to other parts of the garden. Also foxglove are here together with bluebells, which now should be able to do their own thing.

A good deal of the clearing done!

This pictures shows a good deal of the clearing finished, however the soil slips down on to the lane and is then carried away by tractors. When this picture was taken we were waiting for the council to put a curb in to stop the erosion.

After 4 years of waiting, the curb is put in.

The Under Gardener inspects the work!!

After a long wait the men finally arrive and do a first class job. It is now Autumn of 2008 and at last the bank will stop slipping into the lane! Now we will be able to plant small trees here to stop the soil slipping down into the lane.
